Can One Be Positive?

April 23, 2009

puzzleAnyone who has gone through the SFT Awareness training will know that an important piece of the pain processing puzzle is the positive attitude. One day I was working with a student who was struggling with issues at work. This person said he would try to think positively when issues came up, but was having a hard time at that. I then asked him what it means to be positive. The student really could not give a straight answer, but neither could I. It was then I realized that it was impossible for one to be positive. The idea of a positive attitude is really too broad a concept to grasp mentally. This makes it difficult to come up with positive solutions when the term itself is not properly defined. That is why this attitude must be broken down into smaller steps.

SFT Awareness trainers will often break this attitude down into smaller categories such as looking at the big picture. The big picture looks at good things from the event, unused opportunities, usable benefits, and what can be learned. Each one of those individual pieces to the positive puzzle is easily definable by the human mind. Therefore rather than trying to think, “Be positive”, the processor asks, “What are good things, unused opportunities, usable benefits, and what can be learned in this event?” For beginners it is recommended that they write the answers to these questions on paper.

Needless to say, the student simplified his view of the positive attitude and was able to obtain the results he wanted. Now this student has finished the training offered by the program, and is able to be content in every circumstance like the apostle Paul (Phil 4:11).
